Henry Sterling Hill was born on Apr. 25, 1827 in McMinn Co., Tennessee. He was the son of Claiborne Hill (1803-1886) and Mary "Polly" Cate (1805-1873), the second of their ten known children.

Sterling's father, Claiborne, was born in Claiborne Co., TN. It appears that he was named "Claiborne" after the county in which he was born. Polly was born in Jefferson Co., TN. Both died in Brownsboro, Linn Co., Oregon and are buried y there in the Pleasant View Baptist Cemetery.

On Feb. 24, 1849, Sterling married Mary Ann Wallace ((1832-1853) in McMinn Co., Tennessee. A native Tennessean, Mary was the daughter of George Washington Wallace (1897-1881) and Elizabeth Sneed (1811-1870). The burial sites of Mary's parents are currently unknown.

Mary Ann died on June 14, 1853 when she was just 21. She and Sterling were married for four years and had two young children, Wallace Paducah Hill (1850-1933) and John Emory Hill (1850-1933). Some believe that they had a third child, Elizabeth Hill (born in 1851), who did not survive infancy. Possible.

Soon after the death of his first wife, Mary Ann, Sterling apparently took his two young sons, Wallace (abt 3) and John (abt 1), back to McMinn Co. (?), Tennessee. This was probably due to the fact that they were so young and they had no mother to take care of them in Missouri. Sterling left them in Tennessee with the parents of his deceased wife , George Washington Wallace and Elizabeth Sneed.

George and Elizabeth raised young Wallace to adulthood. However, about 1857 (?), they sent Wallace's younger brother, John, to live with James Canada Peck (1838-1915) and his wife, Elizabeth Bussell (1835-1904) in Claiborne Co., TN. they a had married earlier that year. The Pecks raised John to adulthood. It is not known what relation, if any, they were to Sterling, Mary Ann or the Wallace family.

On Mar. 19, 1854 Sterling, age 26, married 18 year old Sarah Russell Joyce (1837-1923) in Jackson Co., Missouri. Born in Patrick Co., Virginia, she was the daughter of Alexander J. Joyce (1801-1876) and Lucy Russell Hudson (1804-1870), both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Grove, Jackson Co., Missouri. He did not bring his two sons from his first marriage into his household in Missouri possibly due to his new wife's youthful age and possibly because the two boys had adapted well to their new homes.

Sterling and his second wife, Sarah, were married for 30 years and had five known children. They were Jacob Farmer Hill (1855-1938), Claiborne Milton Hill (1857-1950), George Washington Hill (1861-1937), Sterling P. Hill (1866-1925) and Etta Mae Hill (1869-1936). They were probably other unknown children that died at/near birth or who did not survive childhood.

Sterling died in Brownsville, Linn Co., Oregon on June 19, 1884 at the age of 57. He is buried in the Pleasant Butte Baptist Cemetery in Brownsville where his parents are buried.

His second wife, Sarah, outlived him by 39 years, however, she did not remarry. Sarah died on Oct. 22, 1923 in Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon at the age of 88. She is buried in Riverview Cemetery located in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon and shares a headstone with their unmarried son, Sterling P. Hill (1866-1925).
