Sometime after Harry's birth in 1886, the family left Illinois and resettled in Nebraska, where Mettie was born in January of 1888. By the time twins Ralph and Alfred were born in 1901, the family had again relocated, this time to Indiana.
I found the family on the 1900 Census, living in Rochester, Fulton Co., Indiana, where John Greer, aged 54, was working as a day laborer. Nannie, aged 33, reported that she had had six children and that all six had survived to that census. There with their parents were Bert, aged 16, Harry, aged 15, Mettie, aged 13, Raymond, aged 10, and James, aged 6. Twins Ralph and Alfred would join the family the following year. Just before the census takers began making their rounds, John and Nannie's daughter Sadie May married Neal Woodcox on 28 Feb 1900 in Fulton County and they were living in nearby Aubbeenaubbee, Fulton County.
By the 1910 Census, the family had relocated to Benzonia, Benzie Co., Michigan. John Greer, aged 66, was farming. Nannie, aged 44, reported that she had had eight children and that all eight were still living. Six of them were still at home with their parents—Bert, aged 25, Harry, aged 23, Raymond, aged 21, James, aged 17, and Ralph and Alfred, both 8 years old.
The year after that census, the family lost husband and father John on 13 May 1911.
The rest of the family appeared on the 1920 Census, living in Rochester, Fulton County. Head of household was Mrs. John D. Greer, i.e. Nannie, widowed, aged 57. Three of her sons were still with her—Harry, aged 33 and working for the railroad, and twins Ralph and Alfred, aged 18, both boys working in a packing house.
Five years after that census, Ralph married Thelma G. Roberts on 20 May 1925 in Fulton County. They welcomed son Ralph Roberts on 17 Feb 1926. I found the three of them on the 1930 Census, living at 501 Center St. in Goshen, Elkhart Co., Indiana, where Ralph, aged 28, was working as a pressman for a rubber manufacturer. Thelma, aged 26, was keeping house. Home with her was Ralph Jr., aged 4.
The family was still living in Goshen when the 1940 Census came around, but they were living at 1001 Douglas Street. Ralph, aged 38, was doing research work for a rubber works. Thelma, aged 37, was working as an operator for a telephone company. Ralph Jr., aged 14, was attending school
Ralph died on 2 Mar 1983. His mortal remains were cremated. His headstone here in Moon Cemetery does not have his birth and death years so this is likely a cenotaph.
