Brantley County was saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Highsmith of Nahunta whose death accrued this Saturday morning, June 22, 1963 at the home of her brother in Mershon following an extended illness and her death removes one of Brantley County’s most beloved residents.

Mrs. Highsmith was born in Wayne (now) Brantley County and was the daughter of the late Elder John Strickland and Sarah Knox Strickland. She received her education in the schools of the county and was a devoted member of the Nahunta Baptist Church.

She was active in the women’s Missionary of her Church and was Chairman of the community Missions Committee. She had been Treasurer at omens Missionary Union of the Piedmont Association for the past 17 years. She was the widow of the late William T. Highsmith.

She was also a member of the Nahunta Garden Club and for many years was the local representative for a cosmetic firm.

Possessed of quiet manner and unassuming disposition. She was a kind and true friend, devoted to her church well and her dedication to Christian principals had a tremendous influence for good.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Belle S. Boatright of Mershon, Mrs. T. G. Ritch of Jesup, and Mrs. S.W. Popwell of Belleville; one brother Charles N. Strickland of Mershon.

Several nieces and nephew and other relatives also survived. Funeral serves were held Sunday afternoon June 23, at 4 O’clock at Nahunta Baptist with Rev. Cecil F. Thomas, assisted by Rev. Carl E. Middleton, the Rev. H. L. Dixon the Rev. H. J. Johnson, and Rev. A. J. Harper, conducting the rites in the presences of a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.

The body lay in state in the church for one hour prior to services. Interment follow in the Smyrna Cemetery.

Serving the pallbearers were Messrs. Bruce Popwell, Earl Boatright, Arthur Strickland, Lance Strickland, J. E. Strickland and T. G. Ritch Jr.

The honorary escort was composed of lady’s WMU of the Piedmont Association.
