She was the widow of the late Elder John Strickland who died forty-two years ago. Mrs. Strickland was born in Wayne County, now Brantley. Her father was Captain James Knox and her mother was Mary Jane Jones Knox. Mrs. Strickland was noted for her sunny cheerful disposition. She had been ill for about two months.
Funeral services were held at Smyrna Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Elder Frank Jones conducting the rites. A large crowd of relatives and friends filled the church house to overflowing and a beautiful and impressive service gave testimony to the life that had passed to another world.
Surviving Mrs. Strickland are her sons, John Evan Strickland, representative from Pierce County, Norman Strickland, Mershon, Jasper Newton Strickland, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., William Rueben "Billy" Strickland, Tax Commissioner Brantley Co. and Joe Strickland, Nahunta; four daughters, Mrs. William Tell Highsmith (Mary Elizabeth "Mollie), Nahunta, Mrs. Spencer W. Popwell (Sara Jane), Brunswick, Mrs. James Mack Boatwright (Zoie Bell), Mershon, and Mrs. (Dr.)Thomas G. Ritch (Nora Lee), Jesup. Her sisters are Mrs. G.P. Folks and Mrs. Dora Miller of Waycross. Mrs. Strickland's grandsons acted as pallbearers.
She was connected with the leading pioneer families of Brantley and Wayne counties and her passing is mourned by a host of friends who knew and loved her.
