Born in Johnston County 1878, Oscar was the 3rd of 4 known surviving children born to Joseph Daniel Ballenger, CSA and his (1st) wife, Laura L. Bridges (ca. 1847-1886).

He was 10 years old when his mother died, and his father married (2nd) to Sarah J. Baker in 1888, by whom 4 more surviving children were born.

Oscar married Annie Dove Rhodes on January 3, 1901 and became parents to 4 known surviving children:

* Audrey Ballenger Golnick (1902- aft 1974)
* Louis "Louie" Ballenger (ca. 1908)
* Rayden/Raiden Ballenger (ca. 1915)
* Annie Dove Ballenger Carmack Edens (1918-1999)

Oscar was a farmer in Wayne County and died in 1937 at age 60 after a bout with pneumonia. His wife of 37 years survived him 20 years, passing in 1957 at age 76.

Some records indicate he his children adopted the spelling of BALLINGER.
