Laura was 15 when her mother died in 1886, and two years later her father married Sarah J. Baker, by whom 4 more surviving children were born.
Laura married late, becoming the (2nd) wife of Joe Rice of Goldsboro when they married July 4, 1901. He was 48 at the nuptials, and she 30 years old. Laura became stepmother to his 6 children, and no records were found that she ever had children herself.
The marriage was short-lived, as Laura died just 8 years into the marriage; passing in 1919 from tuberculosis. Joe would pass 3 years after her at age 69.
