As a young man, Jennings Kerr moved to Charlotte and became the proprietor of The Charlotte Hotel. In 1859-61, he served two terms as Mayor of Charlotte. Prior to this appointment he held the office of Clerk of the Superior Court, Mecklenburg County for 27 years.
Jennings Bankson Kerr was married to the former Miss Arpeliza Jane Walkup, daughter of Joseph Walkup and the former Miss Jane Orr; with whom he had five children:
Josephine E. Kerr (1828 – 1914)
William Jennings Kerr (1832 – 1863)
Nancy Jane Kerr (1834 – 1891)
David James Harvey Kerr (1837 – 1874)
Laura Emeline Kerr (1840 – 1898)
During his lifetime, Jennings B. Kerr, become one of Charlotte's leading citizens and owned vast real estate holding throughout the city. He had great hopes for his eldest son, William, who was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville (1863), to follow him into public life. But, that was not to be and Mayor Kerr died at the age of 62 on June 17, 1865. He is buried in the Kerr~Brown family plot in Elmwood Cemetery alongside his wife, Jane Walkup Kerr.
