William married Matilda C. Williams in Richmond on 19 March 1850. She apparently died before 1861.

William enlisted as a Private in Company "F", 3rd Regiment, Richmond Local Defense Troops on 20 June 1863. He was promoted Corporal on 31 August 1864, and was paroled as a Sergeant in Richmond on 18 April 1865.

After the War, he worked as a clerk. He died at 605 N. 7th Street of "Cerebral Disease," per Cemetery records, and is buried in his father's plot.
