J. Leslie Wright, age 96, of Santaquin, Utah, passed away October 4, 2003. He was born in Hinckley, Utah on November 11, 1906 to John E. and Mary Jane Spendlove Wright. He married Thola Orissa Miner on August 28, 1929 in the Salt Lake Temple. She preceded him in death on December 31, 1978.

Les was raised in Hinckley, Utah and attended Hinckley Elementary and Millard Academy. He was a member of the first graduating class at Hinckley High School in 1924. He was also the first Student Body President at Hinckley High School.

Les served in many positions in the LDS Church including Sunday School Teacher, Young Mens Secretary, Priesthood Quorum Presidencies and High Councilman in the Deseret and Provo Stakes.

Les was an outstanding athlete, excelling in track and basketball. After taking first place in the state track meet as a high school senior, he represented the state of Utah in the National High School Track Meet in Chicago, IL finishing fourth in the 440.

After high school, Les attended Brigham Young University where he was again active in basketball and track. His freshman year, he and one other student made up the college track team and finished fifth at the conference meet. As a sophomore, his mile relay team set the conference record. As a senior, Les was honored with the Anderberg Medal, as the All-Around Athlete of 1929.

Les graduated from BYU in 1929 and began coaching in Salina, Utah. He remained there for four years and then transferred to Hinckley High School.ÊAfter three years of coaching, he became the principal and served in that capacity for the next seven years. In 1943, Les and Thola moved to Provo, Utah.ÊHe taught Science and PE at Lehi High School for three years and then transferred to Orem. He retired form Lincoln Jr. High School in 1972, after forty three years of teaching.

As a young man, Les became interested in beekeeping. This served as his summer job for many years. He never actually retired, working in the field well into his eighties and advising until the time of his death.

Les is survived by three daughters and one son: Rae (Calvin) Baxter, Springville, UT; Pat (Phillip) Wightman, Rexburg, ID; Jayne (Michael) Neeley, Salt Lake City, UT; and Joel M. (Cindy) Wright of Santaquin, UT; 24 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Jack L. Wright, one daughter, Joan and his wife, Thola.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at 11:00 am at Walker Mortuary, 85 E. 300 S., Provo, Utah. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
