CHARLES ROGER BYRUM,
PFC US ARMY
BURIED AT: SECTION A ROW B SITE 5

Charles Roger Byrum July 15, 1936 - January 10, 2012.
Roger was born July 15, 1936 in San Bernardino, California, the third of four children of Velmer and Marie Byrum. He passed away in Bakersfield, California on January 10, 2012. Roger attended schools in Cheney, Washington and Tatum, New Mexico and had life long friends from both places. He served in the United States Army and as a firefighter in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the Vietnam war, Roger spent seven years there as a civilian and for a time was fire chief at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, the center of Air Force operations in South Vietnam. With a partner, he established a lumber business in South Vietnam which ended when the United States presence ended there. From that time he was engaged in various farm related businesses until his last illness. Roger remained single until he was 56 years old when he married the love of his life, Ann Shipley. He became an instant father, grandfather and brother to Ann's siblings. He leaves surviving, his wife Ann, her children Chris and Susan, five granddaughters and the entire Manning family. He is also survived by his brother Dwight (Nada), his sister Shirley Olmstead (Ray) and his brother Ken (Pam), and nine nieces and nephews who treasured him. He also leaves cousins, two surviving aunts and an uncle who were special to him. Roger will be remembered for his loving kindness to all his friends and family and especially by younger family members for his encouragement and affirmation as they grew to adulthood. Services will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Gregory C. Horn, Pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church and Rear Admiral United States Navy, Deputy Chief of Navy Chaplains. Military graveside services will be at Bakersfield National Cemetery at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012. A memorial service will be held at Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd., Bakersfield at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Stine Road, Bakersfield, CA 93309, or to a non-profit group of your choice. www.bakersfield.com/obits
