Obituary - Esther Knowlton Graehl died early Thursday morning, December 27, 2003, in the midst of an out-of-this-world snowstorm.
She was born in Layton, Utah November 1, 1916, to Franklin Richards and Mary Edwina Whitesides Knowlton, when Layton was a quiet farming town and there were few strangers.
Her father was a bridge contractor, whose work often took the family on nomadic adventures fostering her deep love of nature and ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Following her graduation from Davis High School, Class of 1935, she attended Brigham Young University where she met and married Richard Norman Graehl, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were the parents of 10 children.
As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints, she served in many positions including Relief Society President. She also served in the Florida Mission with her husband.
She was a member of Daughter of the Utah Pioneers.
She was blessed with a boundless artistry and channeled her creativity into caring for her family who will never forget her cinnamon rolls, grape sherbet, batch cakes, cowboy delight and designer dresses.
Her gift for friendship excluded no one.
Her children are Amelia Graehl, Catherine K. Graehl Calhoun (Wayne), Mary Jane Graehl Sundstrom (Eric), Jonathan Knowlton Graehl (Daphne), Edmund Adam Graehl (Kimmie Rae), Joseph Knowlton Graehl, Christopher Knowlton Graehl, Elizabeth Graehl Call (Keith), Gretchen Ruth Graehl (Mathew Williams), 27 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and an infant son. Her surviving brothers and sisters are Mary K. Christensen, Franklin W. Knowlton (Joy), Martha Knowlton Brooke, Richard Knowlton (Marlene), Edward Ute Knowlton (Gail).
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
Friends and family may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary.
Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
