Elnora Bates, age 81, of Clare, passed away Monday, December 4, 2000, at the Tendercare Nursing Home in Clare. Elnora was born the daughter of Charles and Lilly (Keith) Bennett on February 20, 1919, in Clare (Elm Grove). She married Orville Bates on November 6, 1965, in Clare. Elnora was a lifelong resident of the Clare area. She had worked for Holley Carburetor and also as a clerk for the Mill End Store. Elnora was a member of the Eagle Church of God and at one time the Farm Bureau.
Elnora is survived by her husband Orville, two sons: Walter (Sandra) Hess of Black Creek, Wisconsin, and Martin Miller of Grand Rapids; three daughters: Loretta (Kenneth) Warner of Clare, Sandra (Gary) St. John of Lake and Dorothy (Don) Papesh of Clare; a brother: Charles (Marie) Bennett of Beaverton; 26 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. Elnora was predeceased by two daughters: Myra and Myrna, and four brothers: Amasa, Garland, Theodore, and Vernon.
Services took place on Thursday, December 7, at 1:00 a.m. at the Eagle Church of God with Rev. Lonnie Severance officiating. Burial was in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare. Memorials may be made to the Mid Michigan Hospice or to the Eagle Church of God's Building Fund. Arrangements by the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home, Inc., of Clare.
