ORVILLE DANIEL BATES

Orville Daniel Bates, age 91, of Clare passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2004. He was born on February 6, 1913 the son of Frank and Jennie Bates in Sheridan Township and lived his life on the farm homesteaded in 1880 by his grandparents, Chester and Belle Bates.

Orville was a retired dairy farmer, member of the Eagle Church of God and the Clare County Farm Bureau. He loved his church, community and his family. He also loved his land, his woods, hunting, fishing and baseball. Orville appreciated how fortunate he was to have an occupation he enoyed and which allowed him the freedom of being in the outdoors. One of his joys and interests had always been watching his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren's activities in sports, 4-H and just simple growing up.

Orville is survived by his son Lyle Bates; daughters Joan (Paul) Hopkins and Janice Lee; sister Norma (Norman) Hutchinson and sister-in-law Thelma (Lawrence) Bates; grandchildren Tammie Armstrong, Joe (Mari) Bates, Tina (Patrick) Raymond, Steven Fenton, Robin Fenton, Lisa Fenton and Daniel Lee. Also surviving are thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Orville was preceded in death by his brother Lawrence Bates; daughter-in-law Laura (Lyle) Bates; his wive and mother of his children Lyla Sutherland Bates and his second wife Elnora Bennett Bates.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the Eagle Church of God. Burial was in Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare. (The Clare County Review, p. 10 – Clare, MI – 20 August 2004)
