The funeral of Mr. Levi Bowersmith who died at his home near this city on Friday morning of last week, took place from the Christian church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. G. Barker, and interment was had at the cemetery on the hill, (Douglas) under Masonic auspices. The attendance was large, our entire community mourning the removal of one who had been an honored dweller in their midst for many years.
The deceased was a native of Ohio, where he was born in July 1818. He moved to Missouri over fifty years ago, first locating in Carroll county, but soon removing to this place. He made a trip to California, with the rush of the first gold-seekers, and was fortunate enough to secure in a short time considerable means, which he invested and increased in this town and vicinity, and leaves his family in comfortable circumstances.
His wife and four children survive him, and he has two brothers, Jacob and Samuel, residing in this locality. His children are Edward Bowersmith, and Mrs. A. j. Reddout, Mrs. G. W. Williams and Mrs. Ella Paul--all except the son living in or near Brunswick.
Mr. Bowersmith was a prominent Mason, a consistent Christian, and enjoyed in a high degree the confidence and respect of his fellow-citizens. He had been for many years Justice of the Peace, and had held other positions of honor and trust, always faithfully and satisfactorily performing the duties involved upon him. He was a man of strict integrity, of sound views and firm convictions, and has a safe and sure abiding place in the affections and memories of those who knew him best and understand and appreciate sterling worth.
