Born in Schlatt (Bad Krozingen) in Baden Germany. Parents were Bernard Zipfel, a schoolteacher and Cecilia Willig. Moved to America in late 1869 and lived first in Hannibal MO. Later he married Maria Dreyer and the couple moved to St. Paul MN where they raised up 5 children, all of them daughters.

Like his brother, Peter Zipfel who moved to America in 1864, Andreas (Andrew) changed the name to Ziegel after arriving in the U.S.
