Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, January 20th at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Pastor Dave Watters will officiate. Burial will be in the Oxford Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Oxford Funeral Service Chapel. A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army or Alzheimer's Association.
Sam Bales was born December 22, 1923 in Midwest, Wyoming to George C. and Opal E. (Lay) Bales. He was reared in Wichita, Kansas and graduated from Wichita North High School in 1940. He was employed in the grocery business nearly all his working life, spending time as store manager for Kroger, Safeway and independent operators. In September, 1959 he purchased the Oxford IGA store and operated it until September, 1976. For several years prior, Sam was a sales/service representative for grocery wholesaler The Fleming Company. On April 25, 1943 he and La June McDaniel were married in her parents' home in Rainbow Bend, Kansas. The couple has made their home in Oxford for the past 52 years.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, La June Bales, Oxford; his sons, Ronald Bales and wife Jan, of Mulvane; Clifford Bales and wife Anita of Oxford; Robert Bales of Wichita; and a daughter, Carolyn Mosely and husband Alan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Tiffany Spencer and her husband Troy of Wichita; Clinton Bales and his wife Amy of Denver; Casie Katzer and her husband David of Osawatomie; Ashley Bales of Mulvane; and Morgan Bales of Mulvane; four great-grandchildren, Maclaine and Madison Spenser of Wichita; and Holton and Hudson Katzer of Osawatomie
