Mother of 11 Children, Sidney, Jennie Barrett, William, Richard, Rosette Diffenbacker, Maria Dean, Joseph, David N., James, Martha Cahail and Minnie L. Moats.

Sarah had a twin sister Nancy, who married David's older brother John Hitsman. John & Nancy lived and died in Waddington, St. Lawrence Co., New York.

The Democrat last week announced the death of Mrs. Sarah Hitsman, which occured at Fort Dodge on Thursday afternoon, June 20. The remains were brought to this city Friday morning at 9:30 and taken to the home of her son, William Hitsman, 333 West Nineth street where the funeral took place at 11 o'clock Saturday forenoon. Sarah Coons was born in Matilda, Canada February 25, 1821. She came to the United States when twelve 12 years of age. She married David Hitsman April 20, 1838, who preceded her in death a number of years ago. To them were born eight sons and six daughters, four sons and six daughters surviving. William of Boone, Joseph of Luther, Richard of Valley City, N. D., David of Fort Dodge, Mrs I.L. Barrett of this city, Mrs. Minnie Moats of Luther, Mrs Martha Cahaill and Mrs. Rosa Edgar of Fort Dodge and Mrs. Maria Dean of Calhoun county. She united with the Wesleyan Methodist church in 1850 and transfered her membership to the M. C. Church when she and her husband moved to the vicinity of Luther, of this church she remained a faithful member to the time of her death. Her home of over thirty years has been near Luther and her neighbors testify to the purity and beauty of her character in the highest terms. She was buried in the Clark cemetery east of Luther June 22, 1901. The funeral services being held in the Luther M. E. church and conducted by her pastor, W. J. Stratton.
