In 1934 he was united in marriage to Anna Lenora Henrietta Mohr. They were the parents of 1 son and 7 daughters.
In the 1940's and 1950's, Merle was employed as a stonemason working on various building projects. In the 1960's he was one of the many who built the I-90/94 Interstate.
Disabled with severe emphysema in the 60's, he retired to the rural life in Marquette County, WI.
An avid sportsman, Merle enjoyed deer hunting and fishing, spending time with his grandsons in pursuit of the "big catch".
Merle passed away at his home while preparing to go fishing with one of his many grandsons.
He is remembered with a tear for his loss, but mostly with smiles and laughter for his life.
