Joseph Nelson Tipton was born July 11, 1878, in Johnson Township, Brown County, Indiana, son of William and Ruey Ann Freese Tipton, natives of Ohio. His maternal grandparents were John and Nancy Jane McFarland Freese, natives of Maryland and Pennsylvania, respectively, who migrated to Coshocton County, Ohio, with their families. He was tall in height, medium in build, with grey eyes and dark hair. Joseph married on August 20, 1908, to Sylvia McCommons, daughter of William and Hannah Elizabeth Daggett McCommons. Joseph lived in Clay, Putman, and Marshall Counties in Illinois. Joseph and Sylvia were the parents of 5 children: William Roy, Joseph Llewellyn, John Calvin, Ruey Hannibel and Shirley Tipton. Joseph passed away December 2, 1968, in Varna, Marshall County, Illinois, and was buried in Lacon Cemetery, Marshall County.
