A member of the Ponca Tribe, Marie Cerre was a descendent of a veteran of the American Revolution.

Gabriel Pascal Cerre, her second great grandfather, took part in the Battle of St. Louis, the only battle in the American Revolution fought west of the Mississippi.

She married Antoine Riviere of St. Louis, with whom she remained for the rest of her life. They raised six children together.
