Obituary: Merl Leon Tobler, 85, of Hurricane, Utah died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at his son’s home in Springville, Utah. He was born July 29, 1915 in Santa Clara, Utah to Ernest and Cecelia Ence Tobler. He attended Dixie High School and Dixie College before transferring to Utah State University where he completed a bachelor’s degree in vocational agriculture. He married Margaret Mae Bello on December 26, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. After completed his teaching degree at Utah State University, he taught vocational agriculture in Castle Dale, Utah for one year. He then moved to California where he taught in Chowchilla, Bakersfield, Wasco, and Orange High Schools for more than 30 years. He enriched hundreds of students’ lives as he taught them the basics of working with plants and animals and participating in the Future Farmers of America. After his retirement in 1978, he moved to Orem, Utah to be near his children and grandchildren. Never losing his desire to work with plants and trees, he helped his brother Wendell establish a fruit orchard in Santa Clara. Margaret passed away in 1984. In 1985 he married La Priel Isom Cornelius. At age 70, he bought land in Coal Pits area near Virgin, Utah and raised dry-farm watermelons. One year he grew and shipped over 180 tons of melons to market. Merl made a lasting impression on his high school students. Several of them kept in contact with him through the years. Some have even traveled from California to visit him in Hurricane. Merl’s friends and neighbors knew him as a fruit tree and garden specialist. He freely shared his knowledge and expertise, as well as produce from his garden, with all of them. Merl was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and La Priel served a mission to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather to his family. He did not seek glory for himself, only the ability to help others better themselves.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret, and brothers Keith, Kale, and Ken Tobler. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 9, 2001 in the Hurricane 2nd Ward chapel, 155 East 1050 North, Hurricane, Utah at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call at the Hurricane 2nd Ward chapel from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
