E. L. Allen, U. S. Court Clerk, Dies
AIKEN - Ernest Allen, 72, Charleston, retired clerk of the U.S. Court Eastern District of South Carolina, died at a Columbia hospital Saturday.
Mr. Allen retired as clerk in 1962.
Born in Dillon County, he was a son of the late David and Elizabeth Bethea Allen and was educated at Draughon Business College, Columbia. He lived in Aiken from 1941 until his appointment as clerk and was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce from its organization in 1921 until 1939. He was instrumental in securing for Aiken the U.S. Courthouse the development of Eustis Park, the organization of the first club market and originated the idea of staging the 50th anniversary of polo in Aiken in 1932 and the celebrating of the centennial of the city in 1935. He was formerly secretary-treasurer of the Aiken Outing Club was trustee of the Girl Scout organization and served as scout master when Boy Scouts were first organized in Aiken. He was a member of the State Democratic Executive Cimmittee for Aiken County for many years. He served on the staffs of Governor Wilson Harvey and Thomas McLeod.
Mr. Allen served as chairman of the board of deacons of the First Baptist Church, the Saint Andrews Society and the Hiberiean Society. Prior to his appointment as clerk he served as court stenographer of the Second Judicial Circuit for 20 years. He was also a former grand chancellor of the of and keeper of records and seals. Mr. Allen was also a Mason. Surviving are his wife, Leona Clay Allen; two daughters. Mrs. Frances Allen McNair, Salley, and Mrs. Elizabeth Allen Black, Charleston; two sisters, Mrs. lolly Wallace, Hartsville and Mrs. W. L. Tillma Bennettsville; and two brothers, Henry Allen, Augusta, Ga., and Fred Allen, Hartsville.
Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church, Aiken at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Interment at Bethany Cemetery.
