Christine was the daughter of a professor at Hampden-Sydney. In October of 1866 she was wed to James H. Garlick of New Kent by Reverend McIlwaine at the Farmville Presbyterian Church. Her husband went on to be on the medical staff at Western State Hospital. They were living there when she suffered a fall, from which the subsequent illness ended her eloquent life. She was married forty-eight years.
