A son of James & Jeannie (Nimmo) Carter. He married Etta Fuessley in Fairbury, September 7, 1916.


The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private James W. Carter (MCSN: 94454), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Ninety-Sixth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action at Bouresches, France, 6 June 1918. After having been wounded in the capture of Bouresches, Private Carter displayed remarkable energy and courage in fearlessly attacking superior numbers of the enemy and materially aiding in their defeat.

Fairbury - The funeral of James W "Jay" Carter, 76, will be Thursday at 11 am at the Stiver Home for Funerals. The Rev George Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Mr Carter died Tuesday morning after being stricken at his home. He had been in failing health since July. He was born April 23, 1895 at Fairbury, a son of James and Jeannie (Nimmo) Carter. He married Etta Fuessley in Fairbury Sept 7, 1916. Surviving are his wife; 2 sons James of East Dundee and Thomas of Morton; a brother Ralph of Pontiac; 6 grandchildren. A sister preceded him in death. He was a retired farmer and had served as construction superintendent for Thuro-Bilt of Fairbury. He retired in 1960 and moved to Missouri and returned to Pontiac in 1968 and has lived in Fairbury since August. Mr Carter had a great interest in horses and served as track marshall at the Fairbury Fair for 31 years. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge, the Masonic Lodge, and the Lions Club and several riding clubs. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Republic, MO.
