Rosemary Akre Shewan was born Apr 26, 1938 in Arlington, Virginia. She was the eldest child of Eugene C. Akre (1914 - 1995) and Rose Mangin Akre (1912 - 1989).

As a child Rosemary lived on Quantico Marine Corps Base, Virginia and attended the Quantico base school while her father served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. The Akre family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania in 1951, and Rosemary graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1952 and Erie Academy High School in 1956. She was employed part-time as a business office worker at General Telephone.

In 1957 Rosemary married William T. Shewan (1933 - 1994) in a ceremony at Sacred Heart Church in Erie. The marriage was officiated by the Rev. John W. Rea (1918 - 2002), a friend of the Akre family from Virginia. Rosemary raised their five children as a full-time mother.

In 1959 Rosemary and William bought the home on West 21st Street that her mother Rose had grown up in, living there for 53 years. Rosemary was active in parish activities at Sacred Heart Church, including PTO President for two years, PTO representative to the Parish Council, Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader, hospitality ministry, and Big Giveaway committee member. For 38 years she was a member of the church cleaning team, also serving as a team leader and organizer. She also helped to organize many card parties, communion breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, rummage sales and other parish events. She enjoyed knitting, needlework, sewing, crossword puzzles, antique collecting and reading. She also enjoyed the theater and was a long-time season ticket holder of the Erie Playhouse.

Rosemary died Jan 11, 2012 after a short illness. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William and their daughter Jean Shewan Abata (1960 - 2005). She was survived by one son, three daughters and nine grandchildren. Also surviving were one sister and two brothers.
