He is buried in the family plot of James and Persis (Earle) WELLS. James was married and had children in Berlin Heights, Erie Co., Ohio before he relocated to Hillsdale Co., Michigan.
On the Saturday before 9 Nov 1887 he was in an altercation with his neighbor, John White. He struck White with a club and killed him. Distraught in jail, he hung himself by the bed sheets. He supposedly told the jailor that if anything happened to him that his assets should be given to the White family. His worth was estimated to be $10,000. Probate and death certificate have been requested.
