Joseph Siegfried was born on 2 February 1721 in an area of Pennsylvania the Indians called Olunk in Philadelphia County (part of which became Berks County in 1752). Joseph's Father signed a petition in 1720 as Hans Sigfridt to create Oley Township from this part of Philadelphia County. The Petition died in the Pennsylvania Courts in Philadelphia and a second Petition, without Hans Sigfridt's signiture, was submitted and approved in 1740. About 1724 Hans Sigfridt (later Johannes Siegfried) with his family had moved north over the Oley Hills and squatted on Indian land that they (the Idians) called Mach-set-hanne (bears path creek). John and Thomas Penn "purchased" this land via a treaty with the Indians in 1732 and John Sickfrit then purchased 294 acres in Maxatawny from a Land Speculator named Casper Wister. Hans Sigfridt signed a Petiton in 1742 to create Maxatawny Township. When Johannes Siegfried died in December 1747, he owned 600 acres of land in Maxatawny Township and willed 300 acres to son Joseph and 300 acres to son John.
