A Jamestown man, severely burned during a fire Christmas night at his home, has died at a Nashville hospital. 57 year old Lyle Hawkins, Jr. succumbed to his injuries Tuesday evening at Vanderbilt Hospital’s Burn Unit.

Hawkins was found lying on the porch of his home, with his clothing on fire, around 8:15 Sunday night by a passing motorist who stopped and “smothered the flames” with his own shirt and coat.

Hawkins was initially taken to the Russell County Hospital by ambulance, then flown to the U.K. Medical Center, but later Sunday night was transferred to Vanderbilt for treatment of 2nd and 3rd degree burns over the lower half of his body.

Police and Fire officials from local and state agencies tell WJRS NEWS they believe the fire originated in a trash can inside the home….but exactly how the fire started remains under investigation.
