Married 1654 Francis Howard sister of Charles Howard 1st earl of Carlisle who were descended from Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk-uncle to Queen Anne Boleyn and Queen Katherine Howard and also a descendant of King Edward I of England; also Francis Howard was cousin to Margaret Howard Cotton of baronet Cotton of Connington, Co Huntington England; Margaret Cotton was grandmother of John Cotton-husband of Francis Downing Cotton
His son Sir George Downing, 2nd Baronet of East Hatley married to Lady Catherine Cecil daughter of James Cecil, 3rd Earl of Salisbury- a great grandson of Robert Cecil 1st Earl of Salisbury and related to Thomas Cecil 1st Earl of Exeter; Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford and philosopher Sir Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Albans
His grandson Sir George Downing, 3rd Baronet {1685-1749} married to daugther of Sir William Forester of Watling-street in Shropshire. Died without heirs. Directed that his title and fortune should pass to his cousin Sir Jacob Downing and three cousins in succession; if they died without issue the estates were to founded for a Downing College at Cambridge for founding of a University if his line died out. After he and other heirs died, Sir Jacob widow refused to give up estates; when she died in 1778 her second husband and son of her sister continued to resist the will until the Court of Chancery ruled in 1800 in favor of Sir George Downing's will and the founding of Downing College of the University of Cambridge England
His brother-in-law was Governor Simon Bradstreet.
The vault under the chancel was erected by him.
