He was a farmer but operated a grocery store in Lone Elm near Forney in the 1930's and 1940's. His granddaughter remembers that he always gave them some kind of treat, like oranges, when they visited him. He was born in Bradley County Tennessee and his family came to Texas at the end of the civil war, as they really were a family divided by the Civil War, part of his father's brothers fought for the North and part for the South. His father Samuel Shipley surrendered at Vicksburg along with some other family members. Uncle and cousins fought on both sides of the conflict. Mr. Alex was 9 months old when the family left Tennessee. They originally settled in Garland area, but his father died at a young age and his mother bought and moved the family to Forney, Thus we have the Garland Shipleys and Forney Shiples. He had the following brothers and sisters, Daniel Watson Shipley, John Thomas SHipley, Tennessee Jane SHipley Patton, Mahalia SHipley Garner and Belle Shipley Taylor.

Mr Alex was married twice and had the following children, 11 Sons and 3 daughters. His children were Howard, Ethel, Fowler, Bill, Denny, Frank, Austin, Luke, Roscoe, Joe, Harry, Lottie, Betty and Dick. His son Joe Bailey Shipley is buried as James Sterett, due to changing his name he is buried in Dallas under that name

He farmed and feed his children on the Shipley farm in Forney.
