Dan Shipley was born in Tennessee. His parents were Samuel Shipley and Sarah Groves. His family came to Texas at the end of the civil war, It was indeed a case of brother against brother. Samuel Shipley and his brother Thomas F. Shipley were confederate soldiers and three of their brothers were union. Samuel & Thomas surrendered at VIcksburg, Mississippi and were freed upon agreeing that they would never bear arms against the Union. The family of both of these brothers and the Groves Brothers all came to Texas in 1867. Dan Shipley is one of six children. He had the following brothers and sisters. Alexander Shipley who settled and lived in Forney. John THomas Shipley settled in the Crandall area. Tennessee Jane Shipley Patton settled in the Kaufman area, as did Dan. Bell Shipley Taylor lived in Forney, amd Mahala Shipley Garner settled in East Texas. Their father Samuel died in 1875 and Sarah moved from Garland area to Forney with her children. Samuel's brother Thomas stayed in the Garland area, thus we have the Kaufman County Shipleys and their cousins Garland Shipleys.

Dan Shipley married Mary Ellen Mink in Texas, he was born in Tennessee on Feb 9, 1862 and Died in Kaufman County on June 2, 1948. He and Mary Ellen had the following children.
