James William Blackwood & his brother John were killed by bushwhacking Civil War outlaws.
In the 1894 Biography of Christopher Columbus Hudson, daughter Nancy's husband, it says "William and Sarah Blackwood came from Georgia, to Newton County, Ark., before the war. In this county he was killed in war times [Civil War: 1861-1865], while at home. He was a Federal soldier." From Goodspeed Brothers, Publishers, 1894.
As told in "Ozark Cousins" book by Bud Phillips...
"The Murder of the Blackwood Brothers [James Milton Blackwood's sons]:
James and John Blackwood were working together in a field near Cowell [Newton County, Arkansas] sometime during the Civil War when bushwhackers came upon them. One was shot down there in the field. The other attempted to flee but was shot from the top of a rail fence over which he was climbing. I believe that both these brothers are buried at Cowell."
In Evelyn Flood's index of Newton County, Arkansas probates, she lists James "William" Blackwood's probate as 1867, as found in book PR-1, p 14 at the Courthouse at Jasper, Newton, Arkansas.
