Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 1 Mar 1860 p3: "DIED---HONEST MAN IS THE NOBLEST WORK OF GOD---____, in Foxcroft, Feb. 19th last past, Mr. Abel Towne, aged 84 years, 5 months and 10 days.

With the death of Mr. Towne, Piscataquis has lost its oldest settler---the oldest pioneer of this county _____ere. When he became an inhabitant of what is now Dover, there was not an incorporated town within the limits of what now constitutes the county Piscataquis. Mr. Towne was born in Temple, N. H., from which place he removed Carrytank, ___d (now incorportated Solon) in the State of ____. He married Miss Sarah Adkinson, of Jay, who still survives him, in the year 1803---and in ____ accompanied by his brother (the late Eli Towne, Esq.) he removed to the township since incorporated Dover, in 1823 he removed to Foxcroft, and he remained until his death. Mr. Towne was one of the first Assessors of Dover (Mr. Den__ ___bert of Wisconsin and Mr. Joseph Shep___ of Dover Village, his associates)---and he was for several years Town Clerk of Dover. He lived to see all his children, numbering eleven, grow up to man and womanhood, all but two of them now survive. He erected thew first house in _____ Village (on the place where Wm. Sargent's ____ now stands.) Mr. Towne was a kind affectionate husband and father and a worthy and _____ citizen. By his industry and strict integrity he won the confidence and respect of all."

5. JOHN d. Feb 11,1791, aged 80 yrs. With his three sons he removed from Middleton, Mass., to No. 2. now Wilton, and settled on lot No. 16 in the fifth range. The cellar hole of his house is in the northeast part of the plain, very near the center of the lot. The place is now owned by James Sheldon. His wife Abigail, d. Aug 28, 1796, aged 83 yrs. They had, besides the three sons, named below, two daughter's: one m. Thomas Towne, and the other m. _____Buxton.
