Mathew was the oldest son of William H. Peek, Jr. (1797-1895) and Charlotte D. Boyce/Boice/Bice (1800-1894). The name is Dutch and was originally spelled Peeck, then shortened to Peek. Matthew began using the English PEAKE spelling by 1880 while some brothers kept Peek and two others Urias (my g.g. grandfather and another brother Robert kept the original phoenetic pronunciation and became PAKEs. Urias' findagrave memorial can be found at: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/101816331/urias-peak. He's buried in Oscoda, MI and brother Robert Pake (1844-1910) in Metamora Twsp., Lapeer Co., MI: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81160137/robert-b-pake. The family came to Sanilac Co., MI in 1853 from Pickering, Ontario, Canada. The parents, William & Charlotte died in Elk Twsp., Sanilac Co., MI and were buried in a plot on their farm although no records survive.

On July 27, 1851, at Goderich township, Huron county, Ontario CANADA, Mathew married Jane Blair, daughter of John Blair. Their 52-year marriage produced eleven children.

Mathew died in Marion township at age 76. He had suffered with rheumatism, which eventually caused paralysis. His death record stated the immediate cause of death was weakness of spine and heart.

Gravesite Details

The gravestone may have wrong information. Mathew and Jane's death records both spelled their last name Peak, not Peake. Also, Mathew's death record says he was born March 5, 1827, and that he died at age 76 years, 7 months, 8 days.
