He was one of the founders of Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). Daniel and Prudence Izzard were married in 1772. He served as a Major during the American Revolution. He was a commander at Nutter's Fort. He also served as High Sheriff of Harrison County, then Virginia. His wife Prudence died in 1806. He donated the land for the cemetery in the year 1790. It was the location of Clarksburg's first church, Hopewell Baptist.
