Virgil Price Akers, 90, passed from this life on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at his daughter and son-In-law's home in Enid, Oklahoma. Price was born July 22, 1921, in Doughtery, Oklahoma, to Hugh Price and Ida Velma (Bobo) Akers. Price was born in Dougherty but was raised in Fletcher, Oklahoma. Price quit school after the 5th grade and went to work in Newcombs Grocery Store in Fletcher to support his family. In 1940 Price left for California to work in an aircraft factory. When World War II was declared, Price left his job in an aircraft factory in Hawthorn, California, to travel back to his home state of Oklahoma to join the US Marine Corps. Price fought and survived battles on Tinnian, Guam, Saipan, Tarawa, and Iwo Jima. He married Jaunita Sarah Hamilton on May 19, 1945, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. After living for a couple years in Sand Springs, Price and Jaunita moved to Fletcher, Oklahoma, and Price went back to working for Newcombs Grocery Store. In 1951 Price went to work for Goodners' Grocery Store in Duncan and then they moved to Lindsay in 1952 to work for Goodners' in Lindsay. Price worked through the years for several different grocery stores in Lindsay, Goodners Grocery, M&W Grocery Store, Bill Williams Grocery, K&B Grocery, and then back to Goodners' until his retirement at age 83. Price was active in the American legion Ball Smith Post #23, holding several different jobs in the Post through the years. Price was a member of the legion's firing squad for funerals and Memorial Day celebrations. He also would put out the flags along Lindsay's main street on holidays until his health caused him to have to give up these activities.
Price is survived by his daughter, Sheila Gilbert and son-In-law, USMC( Retired) Capt David Gilbert of Enid, Oklahoma, two grandsons and their wives, Brian Gilbert and wife Stephanie of San Antonio, Texas, and USN Senior Chief Eric Gilbert and wife Alicia of San Jacinto, California, and also three great-granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah Gilbert of San Antonio, Texas, and Aubrey Gilbert of San Jacinto, California and one sister, Loma Akers King of Canadian, Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and long-time adopted daughter, Georgia Baxter.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Jaunita Hamilton Akers, both of his parents, Hugh Price and Ida Velma (Bobo) Akers, three brothers Obal Tomlin, Cecil Tomlin, and Charles F. "Jack" Akers.
Funeral services for Virgil Price Akers will be held on Thursday, January 5th, 2012 at two o'clock p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, located at 410 W. Chickasaw in Lindsay, Oklahoma with Rev. Bill Baxter officiating and Pastor Matthew Celoria assisting. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Lindsay, Oklahoma. A family visitation is to be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at B.G. Boydston Funeral Home, located at 308 S.W. 3rd St. in Lindsay, Oklahoma from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services are under the direction of B.G. Boydston Funeral Home of Lindsay, Oklahoma.
