An obituary published in the Shelbyville Democrat on July 20, 1922 for John Agney stated that he had died at his home on South Fourth Street Sunday, [July 16, 1922]. John Agney was born in Cumberland County, Ohio on October 15, 1850 being a son of Isaac and Nancy Agney. He came to Illinois with his parents when a young boy, the family settling in Effingham County. He had resided in Shelby County about 40 years. He had served as janitor of the Christian Church as janitor for thirty-two years. Surviving were his wife, Harriet Davis, and four small children. Also there were five sisters and two brothers, namely: Mrs. Easter Belser, Mrs. Wilse Reed and Mrs. Henry Mentz, all of Shelbyville; Mrs. Louelza Willis of St. Elmo; Mrs. Emma Richardson of Humeston, Iowa, and Rueben and Robert Agney of Holland. Mr. Agney was 71 years, 7 months and 1 day old at the time of his death. Funeral services were held from the family home, Rev. N. H. Robertson, officiating. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery.
