James Pleasant McLeod born in Appling County Georgia (Surrency) but moved to live in Jacksonville Florida with his wife Bernice Thornton McLeod and their daughters Viva and Faye, during the depression, leaving farming and the agrarian life behind for a chance at economic success in the "big city". He lived there for the remainder of his life.
He wore many professional hats including; farmer, welder, barber, butcher and roofer.
McLeod Roofing, which he owned for many years, was a successful roofing company in Jacksonville Florida. In later years, his brother Dewey also owned and operated an unaffiliated McLeod Roofing company there as well.
Pleasant has two additional children, Mollie Ann McLeod with his wife Queechie Williams McLeod, and James Leon Byrd (McLeod) with Fannie Frances Everett, originally of Homerville Georgia, whom he never married. James Leon, his son was later adopted by James Pleasant McLeod's sister Lessie McLeod Byrd, and her husband Rupert Byrd, when Pleasant's health began to fail.
Pleasant was named after his great-great grandfather William Pleasant Jowers, of Williston South Carolina, who moved and lived as a farmer in Ambrose Coffee County Georgia, USA, where he is buried.

Pleasant was proud of the 18 years of sobriety and his affiliation with AA, which he credited to saving his life. He incorporated their tenets including honest in his daily life.

As a young kid, I asked him a question without understanding the difficulty he might feel when answering it. Momentarily, he stammered. Then he said, "I have a hard truth to share of which I am not proud." Then he said, "I've never lied to you and I won't start doing so now."

My older adult self more fully appreciates the difficulty in speaking the words but most of all the honesty he showed by doing so. Much love dad - James
