James Alvin Kitchell was the oldest of nine children born to James Harvey Kitchell and Nancy Gill. On 21 May 1850 in Palestine, IL he married Sarah Elizabeth Mauzey (1832-1892). They had 4 children: Gertrude Kitchell, died at 7 mo in 1853; Richard Harvey Kitchell (1854-1885); Garvin Kitchell (1857-1933); and James Alvin 'Allie' Kitchell, Jr (1860-1863) who was born after his father died. James Alvin died at age 35 from systemic blood poisoning from a thorn he ran in his hand. The infection of several months led to pneumonia which was the official cause of death. He had been a merchant with a general store in Palestine, Illinois.
