Nancy Gill Kitchell was born to Thomas Franklyn Gill and Hannah Criswell in 1802 in Cane Ridge revival center, near Montgomery County, Kentucky. By 1814 the family moved to Illinois and settled north of Palestine, Crawford County, Illinois on Lamotte Prairie where they lived in a log cabin.

On 16 August 1821 Nancy was married to James Harvey Kitchell who was a grocer and participated in civic affairs. They were the parents of at least nine children:
• James Alvin Kitchell b: 1824, d: 1860; married Sarah Elizabeth Mauzy
• Emeline A. Kitchell b: 1828, d: 1865; 1st wife of Edmund Courthouse Haskett
• Julia A. Kitchell b: 1832, d: after 1910
• Mary Jane Kitchell b: 1834, d: 1879; never married
• Martha b: 1837, d: 1869; never married
• John b: 1839, d: 1921; married Rachel Maria Wilson
• Hannah b: 1841, d: 1879; married Dr. Nathaniel Steele
• Caroline b:1843 and died at age 3 on 15 Jul 1846
• Clara Francis "Clara Fannie" b: 1845 and died at age 7 on 27 Sep 1853

After the death of her husband in 1862, Nancy lived with the daughters Mary and Martha who were never married. By 1870 Martha had died, and Nancy and Mary were living in the household of Dr. Nathaniel Steele who had married Nancy's daughter Hannah. The house was very full with Nathaniel, wife Hannah, their 2 year old son, Nancy's adult children Mary and John, a ward of Dr. Steele, a medical student, and a domestic servant.

Nancy Kitchell died 5 Nov 1877 at the home of Dr. Steele and daughter Hannah. She had been a member of the Palestine Presbyterian Church since 1866.
