Statesboro - Mrs. Bernice Deal, age 100, died Tuesday at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Center Inpatient Facility after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late William J. and Carrie Watkins Hodges and loving stepmother Rebecca Hodges. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a homemaker. Mrs. Deal was a former member of the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church for over 60 years before joining the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church in 2006. She was a member of the Middleground Home Demonstration Club for over 50 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Horace G. Deal; one son, J.W. Deal; and a daughter, Helen D. Scott.

Surviving are two daughters, Carene Deal Mallard and Betty Deal Stringer of Statesboro; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles E. and Karen Deal of San Antonio, Texas, Hugh and Kay Deal of Raleigh, N.C., and Edgar H. and Diana Deal of Statesboro; two sisters, Louise Pyler of Savannah and Margaret Hotchkiss of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Rosa Bell Hodges of Blackshear; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Elder Randy Waters officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
