U. S. Army Veteran, WW II

Staff Sgt., Financial Dept.

England and Omaha Beach, France

Paul Duncan Jewell was born January 4, 1923, in Monmouth, Illinois, to Henry R. "Harry" Jewell (born in Monmouth, Illinois) and Gertrude Dixon (Henderson) Jewell (born in Peoria, Illinois). He married Marguerite Aisline "Pete" Miller. Their only child, daughter Heather Nudell Jewell, was born in 1958.

Paul enlisted with the U.S. Army, on January 27, 1943, in Peoria, Illinois. His enlistment records note that he was 65 inches tall and weighed 140 pounds. Paul served in the Army's Financial Department during WW II. He was assigned desk duties, including in England and at Omaha Beach, France. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Paul graduated from Monmouth High School, Monmouth, Illinois, with the Class of 1941. During high school, he was a member of Quill and Scroll and also performed in plays, including the part of General Conway, in Valley Forge, and Randy, in Footloose. Paul was also a graduate of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois, where his college friends referred to him as "The Mole." He was a "Teke:" a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

In 1950, Paul was still single, boarding at 231 N. Kenilworth, Oak Park, Illinois, and occupied as an Assistant Office Manager for a publishing company sales office. He was later employed by Amsted Railroad, in Illinois, where train wheels and axles were manufactured. Late in life, Paul was a proud and active "Naturist," and greatly enjoyed attending club sponsored events. He was known to be an imp and for his great generosity to others.

Formerly of Washington Island, Wisconsin, Paul died September 1, 2005, in Calumet Homestead Rehab Center, New Holstein, Wisconsin. His dear friends, Larry and Jane Krueger, were by his side.

Cremation rites were accorded. The Kruegers were allowed to dig the hole and bury Paul's ashes in the same gravesite that his wife occupies. Paul's daughter, Heather, also attended the interment.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two brothers, Capt. Richard H. Jewell and Louis Charles Jewell; and one sister, Harriet Lee (Jewell) Mickey.

Paul is survived by his daughter, Heather Nudell Jewell, last known to be of San Francisco, CA; maternal relatives in CO, including nephew Forrest (Mayrene R. Maxwell) Mickey, of Conifer, CO; maternal 3rd cousins Helen Marie (Hawthorne) Engelbrecht and Shirley Mae (Hawthorne) Barnes, both of Granville, IL; members of his wife's family of origin, in Canada; and his devoted friends and caretakers, Larry and Jane Krueger, of WI.
