The Davenport Democrat and leader, Thursday, December 15, 1921

Stricken with heart trouble while reaching on the top of a pile of chairs in the dining room of K. of P. hall where he had gone to attend a fraternal meeting, Fritz Mengel, 68, 405 East Rusholme street, for 30 years a butcher here and well known in fraternal circles, fell dead at 7:15 Wednesday evening.

Shortly after reaching the hall, he went into the dining room to get extra chairs in anticipation of an attendance larger than usual on account of the annual election of White Shrine officers, and fell to the floor. Death was instantaneous. Coroner J. D. Cantwell, who was summoned at once, says no inquest will be held. Mr. Mengel suffered a stroke over a year ago, and had been failing in health in recent months.

Born in Hessen, Germany, Oct. 7, 1853, he came to Cincinnati, O., in 1871, later to Chicago, and then went to the Black Hills. In 1881 he removed to Davenport, and thereafter to St. Louis, where he married Eva Schmidt on Jan. 19, 1885. He returned to Davenport in 1889 and entered business with his brothers at Fourth and Marquette streets, and since 1897 has himself conducted a meat market at 602 West Fourth street.

Mr. Mengel was vitally interested in fraternal affairs, and belonged to many orders, among them Fraternal Lodge 221, A. F. & A. M.; Mohassan Grotto; Davenport Chapter No. 16, R. A. M.; Webb Council No. 18, R. & S. M.; St. Simon of Cyrenne Commandery No. 9, K. T.; Zarephath Consistory No. 4; Kaaba Temple Shrine; Davenport Chapter 178, O. E. S.; White Shrine; Concordia Lodge 128, I. O. O. F., St. Louis, and Davenport Turners.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Eva Mengel; three daughters: Mrs. Laura Rider, Mrs. Louis F. Paarman (sic), and Mrs. Steve T. Duve, all of Davenport; two sons, Herman of Denver, and Walter of Davenport; two brothers: William of Pleasant Valley and Henry of Moline; four sisters living in Germany; and four grandchildren.

The body was taken to the Hill & Fredericks parlors, where it will remain till Friday afternoon and then be taken to the family home, where services will be conducted at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, Rev. Arthur Buckner officiating. The services at the grave in Fairmount cemetery will be in charge of the Knights Templar.
