John Adams was the son of James Adams and Rebecca Pinch. He first married Mary Muscroft on the 3rd day of October 1834 in the Parish of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Together they had the following children: Charles b. 23 May 1840 m. Harriett Drury; Lucy b. 21 Aug 1842 m. Alfred Elliot; John b. 20 Oct 1844 m. Sarah Ann Needham; James b. 13 Jan 1847 m. Martha Ann Field; Mary Ann b. 28 Jun 1850 m. John Cartledge; Sophia b. 3 Aug 1853 m. William Moore; Jane b. 19 Jul 1855 m. Arthur Marsden.

John was a clerk and preacher in the Methodist church church. He was able to play the violin. John, was an employee, under his brother, Henry Adams, at the Refuge Insurance Company in England; which according to a new found relative, is still thriving today, being one of the largest. John became a branch manager in Sheffield.

His wife, Mary, left him and the children in about 1856, for the United States. John later married the widow Catherine Robinson Oxley. He died at the home of his daughter, Jane, 19 Station Road, Eckington, Derby, England.
