Miss Burgin was the daughter of Temple Brown and Sophia Oldham Burgin. She was born in Madison County, Kentucky, May 29, 1841. The family came to Mercer County in 1854 and soon became prominently identified with the life of the community. She attended school at Harrodsburg's Greenville Institute, afterward known as Daughters College, and graduated from there in 1857, being 16 years of age. She taught four years at the school and then bought the college at Hustonville, Kentucky, where she became the President. She conducted this position until the death of her father, when she sold the building to Doctor B.J. Pinkerton and returned to the old home place and managed the large farm until the return of her brother, Squire John Burgin, from Kansas City, Kansas.
Surviving are her two sisters; Mrs. Narcissa Burgin Jones, 82 years old, who is critically ill, and Miss Alice Burgin; her brother, Squire John Burgin, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Preston Burgin of Lexington.
