Benjamin Odell Jr. is a U.S. Army veteran of the American Civil War, with combat service as a private soldier in Company A, 125th Infantry Regiment of New York State Volunteers.
The entire union military garrison of over 12,700 men who were assigned to guard the Union Armory at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia was forced to surrender on 15 SEP 1862. Rebel commander Lt. General "Stonewall" Jackson had positioned his artillery on three of the heights surrounding Harper's Ferry. Jackson's artillery pummeled the union position on Bolivar Heights from three directions on Maryland Heights, Loudoun Heights, and School House Ridge. The entire 125th New York Infantry Regiment with over 900 assigned soldiers was among the nearly 13,000 union forces surrendering that mid-September day. This Union Force surrender, 15 Sep 1862, on Bolivar Heights is the single largest capitulation of union soldiers experienced during the entire American Civil War. . .
A true copy sourced from the 125th New York Infantry Regiment Unit Roster, New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs website:
"ODELL, BENJAMIN—Age, 37 years. Enlisted, August 11,1862, at Troy, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. A, August 27, 1862; Surrendered, September 15, 1862, and paroled, September 16, 1862, at Harper's Ferry, Va; discharged for disability, March 11, 1863, at Alexandria, VA."
The specifics of Benjamin's disability are unknown, but disability discharges frequently happened when a man "...could no longer perform the duties of an Army soldier." The typical disability is from deadly sickness or from wounds suffered in battle. Civil War Disability Discharges required the approval of a Union General Officer.
