When World War I broke out, he enlisted in the Navy. In 1920 he was single, living in New Mexico with his brother Albert, and working as a car repair helper for the railroad. 1930 finds him still single and living with his parents working on the farm in Arizona.
On October 2, 1939 he married Vermell Francis (Miller) Langdon. No children were born to Lem and Vermell but she had two children from her marriage to Albert Clarence Langdon. Lem continued to live in Arizona until his death.
Graveside services were held for Lem, under the direction of A.L. Moore & Sons, at Double Butte Cemetery on November 1, 1983 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Larry Stair officiating.
