CO. D, 72nd Reg Ind Vol
At his home at Culver's station, at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, occurred the death of Elihu Watkins, after a short illness of congestion of the stomach, and ending his life with almost terrible suddenness.
The deceased was about 98 [sic] years of age, and was born and raised in this county. He was a soldier in the late war, a member of the 72nd Indiana Volunteers. He was a good citizen, and honorable gentleman, and his death has caused much sorrow among those who knew him.
A wife, but no children, survive. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock Friday morning from the Wildcat Christian church. ( Lafayette Daily courier, Thursday, June 5, 1890)
