Jonathan Sanders was a fifth-generation descendant of Capt. John Sanders, one of the founders of the Plymouth Bay Colony. He was born at Haverhill, Mass. to Avery and Abigail Green Sanders; their second child and first son.

On attaining adulthood he moved to Hampton, N.H., where town records show him abiding as late as 1732. Next, he domiciled in nearby Chester, where he married Sarah Rowell, daughter of John and Elizabeth Rowell. Their nine children (Sarah/b. 1743, Abigail/b. 1745, Jonathan Jr./b. 1747, Meriam/b. 1749, Obededone/b. 1751, Elizabeth/b. 1754, John/b. 1756, Ruth/b. 1759, and Avery/b. 1761) were all born at Chester.

Two years after Avery’s birth, the family moved to Haverhill, N.H. There Jonathan purchased 100 acres “in the disputed territory between the towns of Haverhill and Piermont.” Known as “Master Sanders,” Jonathan was thought to be the first school teacher at Haverhill, and in the eleven years of his residence served as a town Selectman, among other civic duties. His four sons all served in the Revolutionary War; John, in particular, served in Col. Timothy Bedell’s regiment. (Research: Rich, George, “Genealogy; Ancestors and Descendants of John Sanders, Fort Covington, N.Y.,” Cleveland: Self-published, 1922. Biography: Matthew McCaffrey.)
