Sally Ruth Waters Lightsey McClelland Prince was born July 27, 1895 to William Stephen Waters and Welthy E. Woodcock Waters in Bulloch County, Georgia. She had five siblings. Ruth married her first husband, Fred H. Lightsey (buried at Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia), on August 24, 1912, and they had four children: Elizabeth Lightsey, Edward H. Lightsey, Herman L. Lightsey, and Freddie Lue Lightsey Blitch Lanier. Freddie Lue was born just 22 days after her father's death. After her first husband's death, Ruth married her second husband, Pernell McClelland, Sr., on August 22, 1920, and they had two children: Pernell McClelland, Jr. and William "Willie" McClelland. After Pernell's death, she married a Mr. Prince. Ruth passed away January 15, 1962 at age 66 and is buried near her husband Pernell and four of her six children (two are buried at Middleground) in the Old Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County, Georgia.
